Our plant hydrosols are distilled the old way at a local Washington farm that is family owned and family operated. The plants are either grown seed to harvest to distilled directly on the farm, or sourced from local farms and distilled on the farm Using copper alembic stills. They distill and craft in small batches, in season, and have a “best If used by” date.

YOUR BABIES SKIN: The first 30 Days 

When babies are first born their skin is neutral to alkaline with a ph between 7-8, as they’ve been in a water environment with vernix protecting their skin. It’s really important to not wash off their vernix and to rub it all in- this is a protective coating to moisturize and protect a babies skin. If a baby is born a little later term it may already all be absorbed and you won’t see any vernix or very minimal (my baby had none left on him when he was born) so his skin began peeling immediately as it adjusted to an air environment outside the womb.

Over the course of 30 days their skin will change (if allowed to) from an alkaline ph to acidic ph of 4.5-5.5) as the barrier builds up with microorganisms, sweat, dirt, and lipid layers. Newborns and babies do not have very active sebaceous glands so their lipid layer is very thin and it’s imperative not to disrupt. You may notice a lot of rashes the first month as their Barrier is not yet built up and their skin is reacting to their environment- this is what is meant to be and their skin will grow a strong barrier if allowed to! Interfere as minimally as possible- let the skin do it’s job and develop it’s barrier organically- this means no baths, no showers, no breast milk, and very minimal lotions (if any).

Let the skin do it’s thing.

During our son Arthur’s first month I just used our Bum Cleaning Spray and Jojoba Body Oil to clean his bum when he pooped. I also use them to sponge bathe as needed- to wipe behind his ears and neck folds and any skin folds if they got really yeasty from minimal air flow. Try to keep those areas dry too. (With organic cotton cloths to gently wipe). 

If you allow the skin barrier to develop and become acidic- your baby will be very unlikely to develop dermatitis or eczema down the road- especially if you cloth diaper and do EC or change diaper immediately after 1 pee or poo, and do everything fragrance free . The areas that are prone to dermatitis and eczema on babies also have a really high ph- and are usually cleansed the most- (buttocks, cheeks, things, hands, arms, etc) causing the barrier to be stripped and dried Out and subject to irritation from their environment. 

Directions 

Use alone or in combination with the jojoba body oil with reusable cloth wipes or paper towels to clean babies bum after pooping and peeing. Spray onto cloth and then wipe clean. Can be mixed with oil in hands after or applied on own to freshen and soothe. Bonus: give yourself a refreshing facial pick me up and mist your own face afterwards, and your nipples too! 

Can also be used for sponge bathing baby during the first month and thereafter. It also makes a great ph balancing and hydrating mist for babies after baths and showers, especially before applying lotions. Apply generously, and use a little jojoba and or tallow Whipp butter after to seal it in.
